Rospatent has published a short version of the 2021 annual report

In 2021, the number of invention applications filed in the Russian Federation continued to decrease – by almost 11.5% compared to 2020. The decrease affected the number of invention applications from Russian applicants. The number of applications from foreign applicants even increased, although not significantly. The number of granted patents for inventions decreased even more – about 18% compared to 2020. It would be interesting to know what Rospatent links such a decrease to – with stricter examination or other reasons. Let’s wait for the full report.

The decrease in the number of applications for utility models and designs is not so significant, only about one percent. The percentage of Russian applicants even increased compared to previous years. Despite the decrease in the number of applications, the number of granted patents for utility models and designs has increased.

At the same time, the number of trademark applications continues to grow (14% more compared to 2020), but the increase in the number of registrations is not so noticeable – only 4%.

Of the positive trends, we can note the continued shortening the timelines for applications examination. So in 2021, the average time for examination of an application for an invention was 3.62 months (4.07 months in 2020), for a utility model – 1.31 months (1.11 in 2020), for a design – 4.11 months (4.3 in 2020).
